Why prompting feels so hard (and why that's a good sign)

Hello Reader,

I can’t remember the last time I published two posts in under two weeks. Maybe it’s the new website, maybe it’s all the new folks joining the newsletter (hi!), or maybe it’s just spring doing its thing. Whatever the reason, here we are — and I’ve got another post I’m excited to share.

I recently wrote about how prompting is a skill designers need to develop — and wow, it struck a chord. A follow-up question in the Slack made me realize I’d only scratched the surface.

This week’s post digs deeper: not into tools or templates, but into how prompting actually works when you’re building something real. And why it’s surprisingly similar to writing. Hope you find it helpful.

👋 A warm welcome to all the new subscribers this week!
Really glad to have you here. I send these emails out every now and then — whenever I’ve got something worth sharing about design, strategy, or the process of making things. It’s usually sparked by a question I’m wrestling with myself.

If you’re new and curious, here’s a bit more about me.
And if you’d like to keep the conversation going, join the Slack group — it’s free for subscribers and full of thoughtful folks who care about good design.

Five three more things

  1. Make things happen - Cap is one of my favorite designers/thinkers.
  2. Why switching to Apple Music made me fall in love with music again - I switched to Apple Music some time ago too, without being able to frame it this nicely — but maybe that’s the thing about clarity. You often realize what you were doing after you’ve already done it.
  3. Who wins in this new generation of AI healthcare companies?
